How do you know when you’ve learned something? What does learning look like? During this microcredential you’ll explore a range of major learning theories and most importantly, their implications for learning design. You will learn how to apply the theories in a range of settings and contexts, equipping you to design and deploy effective interventions.

My goal was to reboot my own learning skills, particularly in the age of digital learning and AI. Happy I achieved this. I also wanted to better support and advocate for good learning design across the TAFE and VET Sector. [I] definitely feel more confident to have rich conversations with peers and colleagues.

Therese H.

About this microcredential

This microcredential commences with an exploration and discussion of learning and the vital role of learning designers. You’ll delve into learning theories and sciences, examining their implications to historical, contemporary and emerging learning design practices. Each theory is introduced and its differing variations explained, with a significant focus on how they’ve informed the development of practical learning designs. Special attention is given to how these concepts relate to technology-enhanced learning, and what that means for the learning designer in a practical sense. You’ll analyse the different theories in a learning design context and critique the effect that technology has had upon the development of learning theories.

Key benefits of this microcredential

This microcredential has been designed to equip you with:

  • In-depth knowledge of a range of major learning theories and approaches
  • Skills to apply these learning theories in a variety of settings and contexts
  • Enhanced learning design practice to develop meaningful learning experiences that can be applied in various industries
  • Strengthened ability to critique and evaluate applications of learning theories to learning design.

This microcredential aligns with the 3-credit point subject, Think: Learning Theories and Implications for Learning Design (010301) in the Graduate Certificate in Learning Design. This microcredential may qualify for recognition of prior learning at this and other institutions.

Additional course information

Course outline

This microcredential is structured into six modules, delivered over six weeks. Each module features self-study materials, interactive activities such as quizzes, multimedia presentations, short video and audio recordings and peer critiques, as well as facilitated, live online sessions. These weekly, optional live online sessions provide an opportunity to apply the content to practical and authentic examples drawn from the workplace, with the course culminating in an industry led expression session.

  The six modules are:

  • Where does learning design fit in?

Delve deep into a discussion about what learning design is, and isn’t, and where it fits into the history of thinking, learning, technology and education and training.

  • Behavioural learning theories

Examine some of the key theories that are part of behaviourism and the applications to learning design.

  • Cognitive learning theories

Discover how cognitivism influenced the design of learning. Study the key concepts related to cognitivist learning theories and critique these theories and their applications.

  • Social Learning Theory and Constructivism

Begin with an exploration of the influence of socio-cultural perspectives on learning. Then take a deep dive into social learning theories, including social cognitivism and constructivism.

  • Connectivism

Explore what connectivism is, and what its implications are for learning design.

  • Expression session

Engage in a practical workshop hosted by an industry expert that combines the ideas, concepts and tools developed throughout the course and puts them into practice.

Course delivery

  • This microcredential includes weekly, live, optional online sessions facilitated by an expert UTS academic, supporting self-study and online learning activities
  • The optional live sessions focus on applying the course content to practical and authentic examples drawn from the workplace
  • Regular formative quizzes throughout the course allow participants to track their progress
  • Online sessions will be recorded.

Course learning objectives

Upon successful completion of this microcredential, you should be able to:

  • Identify, compare and contrast contesting features of historical, contemporary and emerging learning theories
  • Analyse the application of learning theories to learning designs in context-specific ways
  • Critique the effect that technology has had and continues to have upon learning theories
  • Reflect and evaluate own and others’ learning and practice
  • Present arguments for preferred theoretical perspectives that are appropriate to the audience, context and purpose.

Assessment

Assessment task 1: Learning scenario analysis (weight: 60%)

  • Identify and curate one description of professional or personal learning from either your work or personal life. Evaluate the success of the learning based on how closely it conforms to the characteristics of the learning theory you have identified (length: 1000 words).

Assessment task 2: Critique of theoretical approach (weight: 40%)

  • Present a critique of one learning theory with reference to academic literature and reflect on your own learning in relation to this theory (length: 500 words).

Completion requirements
