Course outline

The following content will be explored during this microcredential:

  • Financial statements – profit and loss statement; balance sheet
  • Financial statements – cash flows
  • Analysing position and performance next to strategy – strategic ratio analysis
  • Understanding and budgeting fixed and variable costs in organisations
  • Cost-volume-profit (CVP) analysis
  • Relevant costing and tactical pricing.

Course delivery

This course is delivered online using a range of resources, self-directed study and live interactive sessions with the academic. Course content will be presented online to participants in a variety of formats, including lecture slides, notes, videos and articles.

At the beginning of the unit, participants are expected to review materials and complete tasks on their own before attending weekly online review sessions with the lecturer (sessions are spread over the learning period). Materials will be provided via the learning management system, but participants are also expected to seek information independently. Feedback will be given following formative assessment and during the online sessions.

Participants will need to undertake approximately 10 hours of self-directed online learning each week over 7 weeks.

Course learning objectives

On successful completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the development of financial statements
  • Investigate and analyse financial statements in practice
  • Apply financial ratios for the purposes of understanding and synthesising the business position and performance
  • Apply a range of management accounting techniques to generate and evaluate complex ideas and concepts to improve decision making.

Assessment

There are two individual assessment tasks for this microcredential.

Task 1 - Performance and ratio analysis and insights (weighting: 50%)

  • For this assessment task, you will examine a real-world set of financial statements from an organisation. Using this information, you will be required to prepare financial ratios to describe the position and performance of the organisation next to its industry competitors (to the extent relevant). You will be required to justify your choices by explaining why you chose the particular suite of ratios, present your reflections on competitors and their effects and describe any other broader factor that drove your analyses of the organisation alongside the financial ratios studied. Further details will be provided.

Task 2 - Report  (weighting: 50%)

  • For this task, you will be required to offer a solution to a case study. This will include the completion of accounting calculations and an explanation of the meaning behind the results for the organisational settings concerned.

To complete this online course, you will need a personal computer with adequate internet access and sufficient software and bandwidth to support web conferencing. You will also require an operating system with a web browser compatible with Canvas and Zoom.
