Additional course information

Course outline

This course is delivered in a scheduled format over 8 weeks (40 hours of learning in total). Each week, participants will attend an online session where they will have the chance to apply what has been learned, ask questions and hear from other participants who are taking the course.

The scheduled Zoom workshops are led by the course facilitator and will be conducted weekly on Tuesday evenings from 5.30pm throughout the course. All learning materials including interactive, preparative content will be made available in self-paced online modules.

The following topics will be covered during the course:

  • Organic chemistry basics
  • Functional groups and their importance for intermolecular interactions
  • Introduction to vitamins and their industrial production
  • Vitamin types, sources and biological functions
  • Other types of dietary supplements, besides vitamins
  • The concept of catalysis and common lab procedures to synthesize and isolate organic compounds for pharmaceutical manufacturing
  • Enzymes as catalysts in industrial processes
  • Analytical techniques in quality control.

Course delivery

  • The webinar sessions for this course will be delivered on Zoom – the meeting link will be provided to enrolled participants via Canvas and email.

Course learning objectives

Organic chemistry is the study of the structure, properties, composition, reactions, and preparation of carbon-containing compounds and drugs.

By the successful completion of this microcredential, you should have gained knowledge of:

  • Identification and description of the common functional groups in botanical ingredients
  • Understanding of the different vitamins and their biological interaction with the body
  • Identification and explanation of the role of enzymes, catalysis and other lab procedures to isolate organic compounds for safe use in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Assessment

In order to pass this course, participants need to achieve at least a 50 per cent grade overall, across the two assessment tasks. The final grade will be the weighted average of the two assessments, as indicated below:

  • Task 1: Molecule profiling activity (weighting - 40%). Using a hypothetical case study, characterise a given vitamin in terms of presence of specific functional groups and describe the effect of the identified functional groups on the molecule’s physicochemical characteristics. Furthermore, describe the characteristics, natural sources, biological action, and functions of the assigned vitamin.
  • Task 2: Case study on molecule to finished product (weighting - 60%). Using an industry-based scenario, and a molecule you have been assigned, you will discuss relevant steps of a proposed hypothetical pipeline outlining the most adequate lab techniques for the industrial production, separation and isolation of the molecule, and/or adequate analytical techniques for quality control and purity / contamination assessment. You will refer to the physicochemical properties of the molecule assigned as identified from relevant monographs and Pharmacopoeias.
