Alison Atherton
Program Lead – Business, Economy and Governance, Institute for Sustainable Futures

Alison has a background in social sciences, chartered accountancy audit and advisory and over a decade of experience in sustainability research and consultancy. She has extensive experience in project direction, planning, management and implementation, including large, complex, multi-partner projects. Her clients include all levels of government and the not-for-profit and private sectors.

The consistent theme underpinning Alison's research is organisational and societal change for sustainability. She is particularly interested in understanding how businesses and the finance sector can support the achievement of the Paris Climate Agreement and UN Sustainable Development Goals through responsible investment and corporate sustainability.

Gordon Noble

Gordon is a Research Director with the Institute for Sustainable Futures at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) focusing on sustainable finance and business practice. Gordon has worked across financial systems in a variety of capacities over a thirty-year career including in frontline roles in banking, superannuation, investment management, employee relations and policy/research.

Gordon was one of the first employees of the United Nations-backed Principles for Responsible Investment and founded what is now known as the Principles for Responsible Investment Academy. In 2020, he co-authored the Australian Sustainable Finance Roadmap released by the Australian Sustainable Finance Initiative.

Kriti Nagrath
Research Principal, Institute for Sustainable Futures

Kriti has a background in environmental science, with experience spanning public and private sectors focusing on relevant issues of sustainability. She has extensive project management experience, having managed a range of research projects, policy advocacy initiatives, implementation pilots and large events.

Kriti’s research interests include sustainable finance, decarbonisation, and customer energy initiatives, with a focus on electrification and transport. She has worked with local governments to develop favourable policy environments for the accelerated adoption of cleaner technologies and has extensive experience working with community groups and small-scale enterprises on access to basic services issues in developing countries within Asia and Africa.

Hollie Cheung
Research Consultant

Hollie has a background in social sciences, transdisciplinary thinking and design and is passionate about how we can responsibly allocate capital to rapidly reduce emissions and create a more sustainable and just world. At the UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures, her focus is on sustainable finance within the Business, Economy and Governance team.

Through work in civil society, corporate and social enterprise environments, Hollie recognises the potential and necessity of diverse stakeholders collaborating to create a better future. Her previous research has explored climate solutions to decarbonise passenger transport at Climate Council and identifying levers to transform future decision-making at Next25.

The following content will be covered during this course:

Topic 1: Introduction to climate science and climate change

  • Understand the key concepts in climate science while exploring the drivers and impacts of climate change at a global and national level
  • Investigate key frameworks and agreements to address this challenge and the current progress on these commitments.

Topic 2: Climate-related financial risk and opportunity

  • Understand key terms and concepts of climate risk and opportunity illustrated through global and domestic case studies
  • Examine climate opportunities in selected sectors.

Topic 3: Understanding climate scenarios & models

  • Explore a range of tools used to understand the climate risk and opportunity facing businesses and investments in the short and long term
  • Investigate different climate scenarios and the applications of them in scenario analysis.

Topic 4: Integrating climate in investment

  • Gain an overview of how to integrate climate considerations in investment practice
  • Explore a range of elements such as governance, strategy, engagement and target setting, and tools and examples to illustrate their use.

This online course is designed to beself-paced, with the participant progressing through 4-5 pages of content for each topic. The content demonstrates theory on relevant concepts and frameworks through the use of text, video and infographics. Included activities will reinforce the concepts being explained through practical examples, while a learning quiz at the end of each topic allows participants to assess their understanding of the course.
