Christine Giles

Christine Giles
Head of UTS GDMLP Program, Senior Lecturer

Christine is an award-winning designer and teacher of migration Law programs, who has specialised in migration law for 25 years. As the Program Head of UTS’s Graduate Diploma in Migration Law and Practice (GDMLP), she has expanded the Faculty of Law’s postgraduate Migration Law program by leading the proposal, design and development of this short course.

Previously a barrister, Christine worked as a Registered Migration Agent in private practice and with the Refugee and Immigration Legal Service before being appointed as the delegate of the Immigration Ombudsman for Qld.

A Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Christine was previously the Director of the Graduate Certificate in Australian Migration Law and Practice at Griffith University and a Course Convenor in the migration law Graduate Certificate and Masters programs at the Australian National University.

Fadi is an experienced Registered Migration Agent and academic practitioner leading teaching in this short course.

He is described by clients as an honest, professional and reliable migration agent who  is detailed in exploring clients’ matters, prompt in recommending suitable options, honest when advising clients about their choices and exceptional in following through tasks to completion.

Prior to establishing Lionheart Migration, Fadi built extensive expertise in industry, not-for-profits and educational practice which has earned him numerous prestigious awards from University of Wollongong, the Australian Red Cross and the Premier of NSW. He completed a Bachelor of Commerce, a Master of Project Management and a PhD in Knowledge Management from University of Wollongong. He has completed a Graduate Diploma in Migration Law and Practice at UTS and has featured on the Dean’s merit list.

To lawfully provide immigration assistance in Australia, non-lawyers must obtain a Graduate Diploma in Migration Law and Practice and pass a challenging independent Capstone Assessment. About this course

Under the supervision of practising Registered Migration Agents (RMAs) who have themselves passed the Capstone, this short course will assist you to build upon your knowledge of migration law by mastering the key communication skills crucial to demonstrating your competence as a future member of the profession. Over eight weeks, you’ll refine your practical skills through in-depth case studies and practise tasks, working both independently and in groups.

Tasks throughout the course align with the Occupational Competency Standards for Migration Agents tested in the Capstone. They focus on problem solving, communication and document drafting to prepare you for both the written and oral components of the assessment. In addition, you will complete a final practice interview with a supervising RMA to receive authentic feedback on essential skills needed to pass the Capstone assessment.

This course was designed by our academic experts who also teach into the UTS Graduate Diploma of Migration Law and Practice (GDMLP). The program development was led by Christine Giles, Director of the UTS Migration Law program, with Dr Fadi Kotob, an experienced RMA and Director of Lionheart Migration Services, program convenor of the course. Course outline

This course is conducted over an 8-week period, with 6 weeks of online classes and self-managed study, followed by a 2-week assessment period. The facilitated online sessions will be conducted via Zoom with meeting links and course materials provided via Canvas

Weeks 1-6: 

  • Each week, you’ll participate in two 90-minute evening classes interacting with the program convenor, Dr Fadi Kotob, and your fellow participants, completing initial work on group tasks (see Participation tasks) and discussing Capstone assessment strategies.
  • The collaborative work (in groups of 2-3) involves preparing reference resources for use in the Capstone assessment. Each group will present their resource to the rest of the class during the Zoom sessions.
  • During Weeks 2-4, short-answer practice questions (see Participation tasks) will be set during class for your individual completion by the next class. Your individual submissions will be distributed amongst the cohort for peer review to be completed prior to the next class when the answers will be discussed.
  • Individual written submissions (Letter of Advice) for the practice case study will be completed during Week 5 (see Assessment: Marked tasks).
  • You’ll also work through additional self-paced tasks and independent study over this period, including multiple choice questions with automated answers (see “No-stakes” tasks).

Weeks 7-8:

  • Individual one-hour discussion assessments with a supervising RMA will be scheduled for evenings and weekends (see Assessment: Marked tasks).

Assessment

Marked tasks (Pass/Fail)

Individual tasks practising components of the Capstone Assessment:

  • Written Letter of Advice responding to a provided case study (time constraint of 90 minutes) – Week 5
  • Discussion with a supervising RMA (approximately 1 hour in duration) about how you would conduct the consultation with the case study client – scheduled during Weeks 7 and 8.

Participation tasks (attempt required):

Group tasks:

  • Prepare resources which can be used in the capstone exam to quickly locate relevant information about the visa subclasses tested in in the Capstone; as a group, present your prepared resources to the class
  • Participate in mock client consultations with provided scenarios: one each as Client, Advisor and Observer (providing feedback).

Individual tasks:

  • Write responses to short-answer practice questions, and
  • Peer review the written responses of fellow participants.

Note that these required marked and participation tasks will be complemented by the following “no-stakes” tasks:

  • Multiple-choice assessment questions (with automated marking) to test knowledge and practise locating answers within an allocated time.

Learners are required to pass the marked assessment tasks and genuinely attempt all participation tasks to be eligible to receive a UTS Open short course certificate and digital badge.

Course learning objectives

Upon the successful completion of this course, learners should have:

  • Honed their ability to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to meet the Occupational Competency Standards for Australian Registered Migration Agents
  • Developed resources for use in the Capstone assessment
  • Gained confidence and identified areas for improvement through the practice of both written and oral components simulating the Capstone assessment and practice-based experiences.  

Requirements

Mandatory

Learners in this course are expected to hold or be in their final session of study for a Graduate Diploma qualification in Australian migration law and practice (such as the UTS GDMLP). Academic records are not required for admission.

To complete this online course, you will need a personal computer with adequate internet access and sufficient software and bandwidth to support web conferencing. You will also require an operating system with a web browser compatible with Canvas and Zoom.
